There is a place called Hope … Gardens. I’m invited there once or twice a year to do portraits of families, mothers with children, in transition. An off-shoot of the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles, Hope Gardens brings homeless families to a rural oasis and provides not just the essentials of life, but also teaches the mothers how to get a job, maintain a budget, and keep their own place. The success stories are numerous. I am humbled each time I am there by the resolve and confidence I see in the children’s eyes. The moms, too.
